How to choose a washable dog bed

The best bed for your home is one your dog uses and you can keep clean. “Washable” can refer only to the removable cover, not the whole bed.

Match the sleeping shape

Measure the space your dog occupies when fully stretched out. A bolster may suit a dog that rests its head on an edge, but reduces the flat sleeping area. A flat bed may be easier to step onto. Ask your veterinarian about painful movement or special support needs; this article makes no therapeutic claim.

Three checks that prevent disappointment

  1. Read cleaning instructions for the cover and insert separately.
  2. Check whether replacement covers are sold and whether your washing machine can hold the cover.
  3. Distinguish water resistance from waterproof protection. A spill-resistant surface is not a guarantee against soaked filling.
