What to pack for a hotel stay with a cat or dog
Research-based editorial. We do not claim hands-on testing or veterinary review. Our method
Pack what your pet already uses. A trip is usually a poor time to introduce unfamiliar food, restraints or sleeping arrangements.
Keep the essentials together
- Usual food, feeding instructions, bowls and an accessible water supply.
- Familiar washable bedding and a spare liner.
- Secure carrier or appropriate travel restraint, identification and current contact details.
- Leash and well-fitting harness for dogs; a secure transfer plan for cats.
- Waste supplies; for cats, a familiar litter arrangement and a way to dispose of waste.
- Records required for your route and the hotel’s written approval.
- Any veterinarian-prescribed medication in its original labeled packaging, with the existing instructions.
A small clean-up kit
Bring a towel, spare bags and suitable cleaning materials permitted by the property. Tell staff promptly about damage or accidents. Keep cleaning products away from pets and follow their labels.
What you may not need to buy
Your usual bowl, blanket and everyday harness may be enough. A travel version earns its place only if it solves a packing, cleaning or fit problem. Start with carrier fit or washable bedding if those items are missing.
Before departure
Confirm the transport rules separately from the hotel rules. If your pet is unwell, distressed or has medical travel needs, ask your veterinarian before leaving. Avoid giving sedatives or changing medication based on an online packing guide.
