How to choose a pet carrier that actually fits
Research-based editorial. We do not claim hands-on testing or veterinary review. Our method
A carrier has to work for your animal, your route and the person carrying it. A weight limit alone cannot tell you whether it fits. This is a specifications-based buying guide, not a hands-on test or an airline approval.
Start with the animal
Measure body length and standing height, and compare those measurements with the usable interior dimensions. Your pet should be able to stand, turn and lie comfortably in the carrier. Account for the bedding you will actually use. If the pet cannot do those things, choose a different size or travel arrangement.
Soft carrier or rigid carrier?
| Option | Useful for | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Soft sided | Short trips and some in-cabin airline journeys | Interior space, ventilation, secure closures, airline acceptance |
| Rigid | A stable base and easier surface cleaning | Door security, assembled size, route requirements |
Compare two considered carriers
| Option | Useful when | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Away The Pet Carrier | A small dog or cat fits its usable interior; the maker lists a limit of 18 lb | Interior dimensions, exact airline rules and comfort |
| Tuft & Paw Porto | A cat-specific carrier that opens into a resting spot; the maker lists a limit of 30 lb | Exterior size, interior fit and route acceptance |
Away The Pet Carrier
Consider it if: your small companion fits the interior and you want a structured soft carrier with a removable bed.
Skip it if: your pet exceeds the maker’s limit or needs more usable space. No carrier is accepted on every aircraft.

Before you pay
- Confirm the exact flight, operating airline, aircraft and under-seat limits directly. Marketing language does not guarantee acceptance.
- Check returns, spare bedding and how the carrier comes apart for cleaning.
- Introduce the carrier gradually at home; do not force a frightened animal inside for practice.
- A carrier is not automatically a crash-tested car restraint. Verify the exact model’s intended use.
